  • Greenhouse glazing

There are a number of essential considerations when choosing the glazing for a greenhouse. First and foremost, every entrepreneur wants the glass to enable the optimal yield at the lowest possible costs. Additionally, factors such as light transmission, UV transmission and the insulation value are important criteria in this decision. The choice of greenhouse roof also has an impact on the level of diseases due to pests, fungi and viruses.

Safety glass
The standard glass used in greenhouses has a thickness of 4.0mm and a light transmission of approximately 90%. Safety glass or tempered glass is used in most cases. This type of glass is between four and seven times stronger than normal glass.

Diffuse glass
Depending on the region in which the greenhouse will be installed, it can be worthwhile to use diffuse glass. Diffuse glass affects the natural light in the greenhouse.

It ‘scatters’ direct sunlight, enabling it to penetrate deeper into the interior and in between the plants. By diffusing the sunlight that is present in the greenhouse on fine days, it is possible to gain more benefit from natural light. This boosts the harvestable yield and also improves the quality of the end product.

Diffuse light in the greenhouse can be achieved by:

  • installing diffuse glass
  • treating the glass with a diffuse coating
  • using a diffuse protective screen

Diffuse glass is transmits slightly less light than regular glass (by a few percent), therefore it is advisable to apply an AR coating to compensate.
